Description:

The Assistant Dean for Career Services (ADCS) is a member of the core leadership team of the Liberty University School of Law and is the principal administrator of the School of Law Center for Career Services (CCS).

The ADCS manages CCS’s administrative affairs and oversees programs that empower students to plan properly for their careers; that enhance students’ careers and professional development; and that help students develop a commitment to pro bono service, community service, and professionalism.

The ADCS is responsible for overseeing the development and maintenance of relationships with prospective employers at a local, regional and national level to build a portfolio of employment, internship and externship opportunities for students and alumni while also increasing the visibility of the Liberty University School of Law mission to existing and prospective employers.

The ADCS leads a team that advises students on career development; assists students in obtaining internships, externships, other experiential learning opportunities and post-graduate employment; conducts employer outreach and works with employers to obtain interns and post-graduate employees; plans and implements on campus interviews, résumé collections and student applications for employment; creates, gathers and manages resources for students and graduates regarding job searches, databases, and professional development topics; and plans and implements programming for students regarding employment opportunities, job search strategies, available positions for law school graduates, and career development and progression topics.

The ADCS also oversees the management and implementation of the Liberty Law Fellowship Program; management of student participation in career fairs; management and implementation of applicable career services software; management of records and databases necessary for performance of other duties; and works with other law school and university departments as necessary to conduct the law school’s career services program.

The ADCS will lead the CCS to develop strategies for placement of students and alumni in leading law firms and judicial clerkships and will oversee the Liberty Law & Policy Mentorship Program.

The ADCS also serves Alumni through the provision of employment services geared toward them. Working with faculty and other School of Law departments, the ADCS establishes and manages pro bono initiatives and programs for students.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Establish a program of education that helps students understand a biblical and theological foundation of vocation and calling and disciples students through the process of assisting them with placement services.
  • Establish and maintain a rapport with students, alumni, and key external audiences that include the bench and the bar.
  • Oversees the gathering and management of data for ABA reporting; and completion of ABA and other required reporting and compliance relative to employment data.
  • Oversees functions related to the provision of career development and job search support to students and graduates (as requested).
  • Oversees the management and implementation of applicable fellowship programs.
  • Oversees the creation, manage and maintenance of databases and records necessary for career related services.
  • Oversees the process of administering, planning, developing, and executing career related services.
  • Keeps Associate Dean for External Relations apprised of ongoing activities and opportunities to collaborate and maximize impact.

Requirements:

QUALIFICATIONS AND CREDENTIALS

  • Education and Experience Juris Doctor degree from an ABA accredited law school
  • License to practice law Membership in a state and/or local bar association 6-8 years’ experience in the practice of law Counseling/mentoring experience
  • Knowledge of the legal community
  • Experience in managing multiple projects simultaneously of a routine and complex nature
  • Strong ability to work with and learn a variety of computer systems

Physical and Sensory Abilities

  • Occasionally required to travel to local and campus locations
  • Frequently required to sit for extended periods to perform deskwork or type on a keyboard
  • Regularly required to hear and speak in order to effectively communicate orally
  • Occasionally required to stand, walk, and climb stairs to move about the building
  • Regularly lift 10 or fewer pounds.

LEADERSHIP/MANAGEMENT

  • Maintains a Christlike testimony and upholds a demonstrable commitment to the mission of the School of Law;
  • Leads Career Services team to implement a discipleship-based focus in career counseling and services, to pray with students about career opportunities, and help see the career services role as assisting them in the pursuit of God’s calling.
  • Creates and maintains a high-performance environment characterized by positive leadership, a philosophy of campus collaboration, a strong team orientation, and active participation in School of Law/Department activities;
  • Manages, motivates, and evaluates staff to improve quantity and quality of work performed, while maintaining budget and meeting deadlines;
  • Participates in ongoing planning processes to implement the annual school wide goals and strategic plan of the school;
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

WORKING CONDITIONS

  • Work Environment The working environment in which one will typically perform the essential functions of this position is a climate-controlled office setting. It is well lighted and the noise level is moderate.
  • Driving Requirements Use of one’s personal vehicle (or LU vehicles) is required for travel in the performance of the essential functions of this position. Proof of a valid Virginia driver’s license, an acceptable DMV record, and liability insurance is required.
