Case Description
Wyoming became the 29th state to enact a state version of the Religious Freedom Restoration Act (RFRA). State laws such as this one became vital after the U.S. Supreme Court limited the application of the federal RFRA to only federal, and not state, law. Wyoming’s RFRA enables those who believe their “exercise of religion has been substantially burdened or is likely to be substantially burdened in violation of this act” to seek relief in court. It is scheduled to take effect on July 1. The Center was a co-leader of a broad coalition that drafted and successfully lobbied for passage of the federal RFRA, on which the state versions are based, in 1993.
