- One of the most legally underserved sections of our citizen population is those in addiction treatment and recovery – and they are ones most in need of legal help. 3R Ministries, founded by David Valerio in 2009, serves such people, in particular those in recovery at Adult and Teen Challenge rehabilitation centers in Northern California. On February 24, David Valerio shared his insights on serving people at rock bottom in their lives, such as those who are homeless or battling addictions and with a laundry list of outstanding legal matters, including arrest warrants. This presentation provided legal aid attorneys with tools to engage such clients, particularly those in addiction treatment and recovery, by helping them to help themselves. Mr. Valerio also spoke on providing Christ-centered and compassionate representation before the courts, when necessary, to assist clients in obtaining mercy over judgment (James 2:13).
David Valerio is currently the legal ministry advisor to Adult and Teen Challenge, a Christian drug and alcohol recovery ministry. Mr. Valerio has been conducting pro-bono services for people in need for his entire legal career – over 30 years. He has experience handling a wide variety of cases including family law, administrative law, immigration, criminal law, social security disability, landlord-tenant, personal injury, IRS and FTB tax issues, and debt management. Mr. Valerio graduated from California Baptist University where he was on the Dean’s List and received his law degree from Lincoln Law School. He is licensed to practice in the state courts of California and the federal courts of the Eastern District of California. He is also a Certified VA Attorney. Mr. Valerio is married to Jolie Valerio, who helps keep him organized, and has, arguably, 6 children – and 8 grandchildren.
