Ken Starr’s Vision for Religious Freedom
The late Honorable Kenneth Starr understood the necessity of religious freedom more than most. In fact, much of Ken’s work after his retirement from the law was dedicated to its preservation.
He often spoke about the “Great Principles” that uphold democracy including autonomy—“the very bedrock guaranty of religious freedom,” accommodation of religious freedom and practice, freedom of conscious, and equality. He also forecasted future crises that would attempt to deeply erode this indispensable freedom. And he was right.
From those convictions, Ken and his family—already good friends to many at Christian Legal Society—approached CLS in 2021 with an amazing opportunity. They wanted to start an endowment to defend religious freedom for future generations.
Ken embodied so much of what we seek to multiply here at CLS—winsome witness, biblical faithfulness, and robust defense of our religious freedoms in court and in the culture.
Today, there appears to be no end to litigation in this space from employment to counseling, from crisis pregnancy centers to Christian clubs on campus. We need a war chest to stay in the expensive battles that can take years to win. Ken knew that and put $1 million of his wealth into a foundation to make sure CLS would be there when it mattered most.
