Position Announcement –Staff Attorney – Part-time
Moved by a vision where justice and mercy flow for the weary and burdened, Christian Legal Aid of DC (CLADC) exists to deliver access to justice for the most vulnerable in metro-Washington DC, with the love of Christ. Our team mobilizes volunteer attorneys and law students to work alongside our staff to provide free legal services to our neighbors in the Washington, DC area who cannot afford to hire an attorney, and as a result, do not have equal access to justice. CLADC is seeking to hire a part-time Staff Attorney to start work on March 15, 2026. Staff and volunteer attorneys offer advice, brief services, and extended representation in criminal record sealing, estate planning, probate, and housing matters. CLADC conducts monthly legal aid clinics online and provides on-site legal services at locations in Washington, DC. In addition, our team participates in workshops and community outreach events to increase awareness of relevant legal issues and equip community members to exercise their rights.

Position Summary
The Staff Attorney (Part-time) role focuses on providing sound legal advice and delivering extended representation and brief legal services with compassion to low-income and vulnerable individuals, primarily in criminal record sealing, estate planning, probate, and housing, and on ensuring that potential clients have access to justice. The Staff Attorney participates in virtual and in-person legal clinics, delivers training to other attorneys and community members, and participates in community events.
Key Responsibilities
Program duties:
- Understand prospective and current clients and build rapport;
- Hold consultations with prospective and current clients; deliver actionable and sound legal advice with clarity;
- Manage a TBD caseload of cases for extended representation and brief legal services;
- Analyze clients’ cases, including: a) criminal records for eligibility for setting aside, expunging, and/or record sealing under DC law; b) clients’ assets, liabilities, and responsibilities for estate planning; c) probate matters; d) housing matters.
- Draft persuasive motions and replies on behalf of clients and represent them throughout the legal process;
- Maintain accurate client information, case status, and detailed notes in CLADC’s case management system (Clio Manage or LegalServer) and closely monitor case progression, including upcoming filing deadlines;
- Conduct screenings and brief intake interviews through audio or video calls or in-person, to determine eligibility for CLADC’s services;
- Deliver legal clinics in-person and/or virtually to prospective clients;
- Train CLADC’s volunteer attorneys and interns on CLADC’s practice areas, provide guidance and mentorship;
- Support CLADC’s outreach strategy and in-person community events (fairs, “tabling events”, workshops);
- Other tasks that the Executive Director may reasonably assign.
Administrative Duties
- Keep track of work time.
- Assist with follow-up communication to clients and referral partners;
- Assist, participate, and support CLADC’s key events;
Other responsibilities
- Participate in and support advocacy events before local, state, and federal authorities;
- Participate in CLADC’s team prayer and team meetings held on Wednesdays from 9 – 11 am.

- 1-3 years of relevant work experience;

- Strong emotional intelligence and interpersonal and communication skills (written, verbal, and otherwise) with the ability to interact effectively and compassionately with clients from diverse backgrounds, hold fast-paced conversations, and maintain calmness through tense verbal interactions;
- Take the work of justice seriously but not themselves;
- A self-starter with strong initiative and ability to work independently with minimal supervision, but with a willingness to ask for help when needed;
- Strong organizational skills and attention to detail, comfortable working independently
- Ability to utilize different communication platforms and technologies, and knowledge of professional work platforms and case management systems – Google Suite and Office: Word, Docs, Excel, Sheets, LegalServer, Clio Manage, etc.
- Willingness to abide by and sign a confidentiality agreement, given the nature of the position, which entails managing prospective and current clients’ data.
Preferred
- Bilingual in English and Spanish.
- Licensed to practice in VA and MD.
Compensation and work conditions
- This position is part-time and hourly.
- CLADC offers a compensation of $41.32 per hour, with pay scheduled every other Friday for the preceding two weeks of work.
- Eligible for paid holidays and closures observed by CLADC, proportionally to the schedule of the position;
- Hours of work: approximately 12 hours per week, according to the schedule discussed with the Executive Director;
- Most work is performed virtually, but in-person attendance at CLADC’s office located in the Capitol Hill neighborhood may be required. Virtual attendance is expected for a team meeting scheduled on Wednesdays from 9 am to 11 am ET (EST).
