Case Description
Every year, the Center takes action in support of religious student groups that are threatened or derecognized usually for beliefs that are disfavored by university administrators or student-led associations. These fights can get expensive.
In late 2024, the Texas Senate introduced SB 306, a bill intended to provide equal campus access to all student organizations, including religious student associations, on college and university campuses in Texas.
The Center sent written testimony detailing the long history of abuse in other states of faith-based groups and urging the Texas Senate State Affairs Committee to support the bill in anticipation of an upcoming hearing necessary to advance it to a full floor consideration in the near future.
Should it eventually pass, it would make Texas the 20th state to enshrine such protections and guarantee that faith-based student organizations at public colleges and universities can require their student officers and leaders to have the same faith as the organizations and to adhere to personal conduct standards.
